Business Start up & Company Structure Advice

A sole trader means that you are in business on your own account. Each year you are required to register with HMRC for self-assessment and submit a tax return each year. As such you are therefore required to maintain adequate business records to support your business’ income and expenditure. If your turnover is significantly large, you may also have to register for Value Added Tax (VAT) which means that you will have to submit a VAT return to HMRC every 3 months.

Company Formation (Incorporation)

Whether public or private, a limited company is defined as a separate legal entity which is incorporated to operate your business. There are additional responsibilities that company directors must meet such as the preparation and submissions of annual financial statements and confirmation statements to Companies House and corporation tax and VAT returns to HMRC. The company may have additional responsibilities in respect of payroll if you employ staff. Directors are also required to submit self-assessment tax returns each year, regardless if no income has been earned.
